AUSTRALIA: Tasmania closes international border

Overseas arrivals have been barred from entering Tasmania as a result of concerns over the Omicron variant of COVID-19. Public Health published a statement outlining that anyone who has spent time overseas since November 14 cannot enter Tasmania unless approved as an essential traveller. The only exception is for New Zealand's south island. The Tasmanian Government released a statement saying the decision amounted to a temporary suspension of the current process for international arrivals seeking to come to Tasmania.

AUSTRALIA: Pause to further easing of border restrictions

On the basis of medical advice provided by the Chief Medical Officer of Australia, Professor Paul Kelly, the National Security Committee has taken the necessary and temporary decision to pause the next step to safely reopen Australia to international skilled and student cohorts, as well as humanitarian, working holiday maker and provisional family visa holders from 1 December until 15 December. The reopening to travellers from Japan and the Republic of Korea will also be paused until 15 December. The temporary pause will ensure Australia can gather the information we need to better understand the Omicron variant, including the efficacy of the vaccine, the range of illness, including if it may generate more mild symptoms, and the level of transmission. Australia’s border is already closed to travellers except fully vaccinated Australian citizens, permanent residents and immediate family, as well as fully vaccinated green lane travellers from New Zealand and Singapore and limited exemptions. All arrivals to Australia also require a negative PCR test and to complete Australian traveller declaration forms detailing their vaccination status and confirming requirements to comply with state and territory public health requirements.

NEW ZEALAND: New Zealand to reopen to tourists in April

New Zealand has announced a phased reopening of its borders to fully vaccinated travellers in the first few months of 2022. Guests will still have to self-isolate at home for a week, but will no longer have to pass through managed isolation facilities. New Zealanders can travel home from Australia without staying in managed isolation from January 17. They can come from all other countries from February 14, and isolate at home. After that, fully vaccinated people, including international tourists, will be able to travel to New Zealand from the end of April. They must isolate at home upon arrival.

AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND: New Zealand to ease COVID border restrictions

Fully vaccinated New Zealanders in Australia will be able to travel to New Zealand without a two-week quarantine period from January 16, COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins has said. Mr Hipkins has outlined a staged reopening of international borders, with foreign travellers who are fully vaccinated against COVID able to enter the country from April 30. Fully vaccinated New Zealanders and other eligible travellers from all other countries could start travelling to New Zealand without quarantine from February 13, Mr Hipkins said. However, Mr Hipkins said there would be a mandatory 7-day self-isolation period for those who were not required to enter quarantine. He said all travellers will also require a negative pre-departure test, proof of vaccination and a declaration that they had not been in a very high-risk country in the past 14 days.

AUSTRALIA: New changes to South Australia's border rules

Travellers from central Sydney and Melbourne will be allowed into South Australia when borders open on Tuesday, but travellers from local government areas with vaccination rates lower than 90 per cent will be prevented from attending high-risk settings like aged care and major events, like the Adelaide Ashes test. The SA Premier Steven Marshall says fully vaccinated travellers from every Victorian and New South Wales local government area will be permitted to travel, except for Byron Bay, which is yet to hit a vaccination rate of 80 per cent. Those travelling from New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT will be required to have a COVID test in the 72 hours prior to arrival in SA, and must undergo a daily symptom check for 14 days via a phone app. Those who travel from a local government area with a vaccination rate of less than 90 per cent will also have to undergo tests within 24 hours of arrival in SA, and again on days 6 and 13.

AUSTRALIA: Victoria lifts bulk of COVID restrictions

Victoria is on its way to becoming one of the most vaccinated places in the world, with nearly all remaining restrictions to be lifted statewide for fully vaccinated people from 11:59pm tonight. With Victoria set to hit the 90 per cent double dose milestone for eligible people in the coming days, the Acting Chief Health Officer has determined that almost all remaining restrictions in Victoria will ease from tonight – reaching Phase D of the National Plan. From this coming weekend, fully vaccinated Victorians can hit the dance floor once again, there’ll be no limits in the home and no caps or density limits for cafés and restaurants. The vaccinated economy will remain, as will masks in some high risk settings – as both are important in reducing risk as we get back to normal. All indoor and outdoor events with less than 30,000 fully vaccinated attendees will be able to proceed with no special approval and outdoor events with 30,000 or more will only need to publish their COVIDSafe Plan. From 11:59pm tonight, the vast majority of people who come into contact with a confirmed positive case outside their home won’t have to self-quarantine. These contacts will be required to get a standard (PCR) test and isolate until they get a negative result. In addition to isolation changes for contacts, people who have COVID-19 will be required to isolate for 10 days, instead of 14 days.
