JETBLUE: U.S. airline to launch flights from New York to London from Summer 2021

The low-cost U.S. airline has said that it will enter the transatlantic market later this year, offering flights between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and both London Gatwick and London Heathrow airports in the UK. Flights to London Heathrow will start on 11 August, followed by those to London Gatwick on 29 September. Meanwhile, a London service from Boston is expected to start in the Summer of 2022.

SPAIN: Country to lift COVID-19 entry restrictions for passengers from UK and Japan from 24 May 2021

The government of Spain has said that it will officially lift COVID-19 restrictions for passengers from the UK and Japan on 24 May, when a decree takes effect; both countries will be on a list of those whose residents are able to avoid restrictions on non-essential travel to the EU, and will not need a negative COVID-19 PCR test result. However, UK tourists travelling to Spain will still have to quarantine on their return.

SPAIN: Country to re-open borders to COVID-19 vaccinated U.S. passengers from 7 June 2021

The tourism authority of Spain has said that from 7 June, U.S. citizens will be eligible to visit the country if they have received a second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, or a single dose of Johnson & Johnson's Janssen COVID-19 vaccine, at least 14 days prior to their arrival; proof of vaccination must be shown, and eligible passengers will not be subject to any period of quarantine on arrival in Spain.

GERMANY: Country's government to suspend most travel from the UK from 23 May 2021

The government of Germany has announced that it will suspend most travel from the UK starting on 23 May, amid concerns about the spread of a COVID-19 variant first discovered in India. German citizens and residents will still be allowed to enter the country from the UK but will be required to quarantine for two weeks upon arrival, according to a release from Germany’s public health institution as it simultaneously classified the UK as an area of concern.

SPAIN: Country's government launches new visitor information tool for international passengers

Spanish government travel authority Turespaña has announced the launch of a new tool within its 'Travel Safe' microsite for international tourists wishing to travel to the country. The new tool allows passengers to consult COVID-19 travel restrictions on entry to Spain, as well as entry and exit requirements imposed by their respective countries. ITALY: Country reportedly opens to U.S. leisure passengers on 'quarantine free' flights

The country's borders have reportedly re-opened to arriving U.S. passengers travelling on approved 'quarantine-free' flights, according to announcements from carriers American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines; Italy on 16 May began to welcome leisure passengers on the flights, which previously were open only to U.S. citizens visiting the country for work or other essential travel. Regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status, to enter the country passengers must provide proof of a negative test result obtained within 72 hours of departure, and then pass another test on arrival to avoid Italy's 14-day quarantine.

EASYJET: Airline returns to leisure travel from the United Kingdom

The low-cost airline has relaunched holiday and leisure flights from the UK to European destinations, and throughout May will operate 186 flights to destinations given a ‘green list’ classification by the UK government, as part of an easing of COVID-19 travel restrictions beginning on 17 May. Among them, easyJet will operate flights to Portugal, Gibraltar, Israel and Iceland which are on this list. However, the airline has also said it will continue to operate to ‘amber’ countries, where it sees demand among customers willing to accept the mandatory COVID-19 quarantine and testing requirements on their return to the UK.

GREECE: Country's government ends COVID-19 lockdown measures and re-opens to tourism

The country's government has officially launched its summer tourist season, lifting most remaining COVID-19 restrictions on movement and declaring their intentions to put the lockdown behind them. In order to be accepted for entry, passengers from a list of 53 approved countries have to fill in a passenger locator form (PLF) the day before they travel, listing where they are staying; they must also supply a COVID-19 vaccine certificate, a negative PCR test result or a documentation of recent recovery from the virus.

WIZZ AIR: Airline to expand Italy flight operations with new Rome base

The Abu Dhabi-based low-cost airline has announced that it will open a new base in Rome, offering 32 new flight services to 19 countries; Wizz Air have said this is the biggest number of routes ever announced at one time, and four Airbus A321neo aircraft will be based at Rome Fiumicino airport in July to facilitate. The new services, which include two UK routes from Rome to London Luton and Liverpool John Lennon, will complement the 25 routes already operating from Rome Fiumicino and Rome Ciampino airports.

BRITISH AIRWAYS: Airline to trial new rapid COVID-19 testing

The airline has announced that it will launch a trial with medical tech company Canary Global to assess if its Pelican Ultra Rapid COVID-19 test can play a role in further re-opening international travel; it is hoped the test can display a result within 25 seconds, and British Airways will first be inviting flight and cabin crew to take the Pelican test and will compare the performance of the result against tests that they are already using. Subject to successful evaluation, the airline hopes to be able to offer the test technology on applicable routes where testing must meet set specificity and sensitivity standards.

BRITISH AIRWAYS: Airline adds new European summer flight destinations from June 2021

BRITISH AIRWAYS: Airline to trial digital queueing system at London Heathrow Airport

The airline has said that it well be trialling new queueing technology at London Heathrow Airport from partner Qmatic, which aims to enable passengers to virtually queue at check-in by pre-booking their slot time in advance of arriving at the airport. UNITED KINGDOM: UK government introduces COVID-19 'traffic light' entry system from 17 May 2021

The UK government has announced an updated 'traffic light' entry system for visitors and returning passengers entering England from 17 May; requirements and procedures on entry will depend on where passengers have been in the 10 days - for travel from destinations on the 'green' list a COVID-19 test is required on day two. For 'amber' list destinations a quarantine period in place of residence and two COVID-19 tests are required. From the 'red' list, monitored hotel quarantine and two COVID-19 tests are mandated. Meanwhile, until 17 May all countries and territories outside of the Common Travel Area are either 'red' or 'amber' list countries or territories; if travelling to England before 17 May passengers must follow the respective rules for each.
