PUERTO RICO: Country places tourism on hold following increase in cases of COVID-19

After previously re-opening to tourism on 15 July, Puerto Rico has taken an about-turn and is now discouraging non-essential travel due to increases in COVID-19 cases. A new tourism re-opening date of 15 August has now been set and many businesses have now been closed until at least 31 July.

DELTA AIR LINES: Airline partners with makers of Lysol to develop updated safety solutions

Delta Air Lines announced on 27 July that it is teaming up with Reckitt Benckiser Group PLC, the makers of Lysol, to research and develop new disinfecting solutions for high-traffic areas in airports and onboard. Under the new partnership, Delta will also use and distribute Environmental Protection Agency-approved Lysol disinfectant spray and wipes.

EMIRATES: Airline to cover passengers' COVID-19 medical expenses

The Dubai-based airline has announced that it will cover medical expenses of up to EUR 150,000 and quarantine costs of EUR 100 per day for 14 days, should passengers diagnosed with COVID-19 during their travel, while they are away from home. This cover is to be provided free of cost to all passengers and is is immediately effective for customers flying with Emirates until 31 October 2020; it is valid for 31 days from the moment they fly the first sector of their journey.

INDIA: SpiceJet gets permission to operate flights to the U.S.

Indian airline SpiceJet on announced on 24 July that it has been designated as the “Indian scheduled carrier,” permitting it to operate flights to the United States. The airline will be the first Indian budget carrier to operate services to the US; national carrier Air India is currently the only other Indian airline doing so, since all international commercial passenger flights were suspended on 22 March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

AMERICAN AIRLINES: Airline increases restrictions on face coverings from 29 July 2020

From 29 July American Airlines will require all passengers over the age of two to wear face coverings at airports and on board, at all times with the exception of when eating or drinking. The airline has said that anyone unwilling to comply may be barred from future travel for the duration of these measures being in place.

UNITED KINGDOM: U.S. embassy in London to resume issuance of some visas from 27 July 2020

As of 27 July the US Embassy in London are resuming certain visa services, including: immigrant visas for spouses and children of US citizens and F-1 and M-1 student visa categories. Students travelling from the UK (and the Schengen Area and Ireland) with valid F-1 and M-1 visas, will not need to seek a national interest exception to travel.

SWITZERLAND: Country to expand COVID-19 quarantine watch list

The country's government has announced that they have expanded to 42 the number of countries on its COVID-19 watch list, from which new arrivals must enter a 10-day quarantine. New entries as of tomorrow, 23 July include Bosnia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Eswatini, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Luxembourg, Maldives, Mexico, Montenegro, the Palestinian territories, Suriname and the United Arab Emirates. Belarus and Sweden, however, are to be removed.

UNITED STATES: Chicago to re-impose some COVID-19 measures from 24 July 2020

The U.S. city of Chicago's mayor announced today that she will re-impose some COVID-19 measures from 24 July; this includes a ban on indoor service at establishments where alcohol is served, and a shutdown of personal services that require the removal of face coverings, such as shaves and facials. While the measures are seemingly not in direct response to any major spikes in cases within the city, they're part of a drive to ensure that Chicago does not return to the peak levels that it previously experienced.

UNITED STATES: Suspension on many U.S cruises extended until 30 September 2020

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the U.S. have extended a no-sail order for cruise ships from ports in the country through to 30 September - it was previously set to expire on 24 July. The order applies to ships with the capacity to carry 250 passengers or more, meaning that a number of small-ship ocean and river operators are though excluded and free to resume sailings this summer.

UNITED STATES: Hawaii delays domestic tourism until 1 September 2020

The state government of Hawaii have announced in a press conference that it will not ease restrictions on out-of-state U.S travelers until at least 1 September, a month later than previously planned. The decision, which was made due to a reported surge in cases of COVID-19 in both Hawaii and the U.S mainland, means that a 14-day quarantine requirement for out-of-state tourists who test negative for the virus will remain in place until the new deadline.
