AMERICAN AIRLINES: Airline partners with Caribbean nations to pilot COVID-19 testing

The airline has announced a first-of-its-kind agreement with select Caribbean governments to directly offer COVID-19 tests prior to travel; the scheme will begin next month in Miami International Airport in collaboration with Jamaica, and will initially be open only to Jamaican residents. If the pilot proves successful, however, the airline hopes to expand availability to all passengers flying from select U.S. airports to around 20 participating Caribbean nations and associate nations.

CANADA: Country's borders remain closed to international tourists until at least 31 October 2020

The latest updates from the country's government show that Canada's borders will remain closed to all international tourists until at least 31 October. This applies to tourism and leisure travel from all countries including the U.S. by land, air or sea. Canadian citizens and permanent residents are exempt from the ban but face a strict 14-day self-quarantine on returning to Canada. The closure of Canada's land border to all non-essential crossings between the country and the United States also remains in place until at least 21 October.

HAWAIIAN AIRLINES: Airline to offer airport COVID-19 testing in some U.S. gateway airports

The airline has announced that it will begin to offer drive-thru COVID-19 testing in some U.S. gateway airports; initially it is partnering with a supplier to do so in Los Angeles and San Francisco, with more locations to come. Hawaiian Airlines have said the COVID-19 PCR tests will be shallow nasal-swab tests, a 'gold standard' screening that meets state guidelines; the tests will be $90 (USD) for results within 36 hours and $150 (USD) for day-of-travel express service.

UNITED AIRLINES: Airline to offer rapid airport COVID-19 testing to some passengers

LUFTHANSA GROUP: Airline plans to introduce rapid COVID-19 testing from October 2020

The airlines of the Lufthansa Group have signalled their intentions to start making rapid COVID-19 antigen tests available to passengers from October, and may consider opening dedicated test centres at airports in the U.S. and Canada. ALASKA AIRLINES: U.S. airline announces five new routes from 17 December 2020

The airline has announced five new routes due to launch from 17 December, which aim to primarily serve leisure travellers. Alaska Airlines will fly seasonally until 12 April 2021 between: Los Angeles and Cancun; Palm Springs, California and Boise, Idaho; Palm Springs, California and Reno, Nevada. The airline will also fly daily, year-round between Los Angeles and Reno and twice-daily, year-round between Palm Springs and San Jose, California. In addition, last month the airline said it would end change fees long-term on all flights for fare classes other than Saver.

UNITED STATES: U.S. government could ease enhanced screening for international arrivals from 14 September 2020

Reports by some news outlets suggest that from as early as 14 September, the U.S. government is set to end some enhanced screening measures for international travellers, which include the requirement that they arrive at one of 15 designated U.S. airports. The U.S. administration in February imposed enhanced screening measures on arrivals who had been in China, the UK, Brazil, Iran and the Schengen region of Europe, and denied entry to most non-U.S. citizens who had been in those locations within the past 14 days.

AIR CANADA: Airline restricts use of face masks with exhalation valves by passengers

The airline has announced that it will no longer permit passengers to wear face masks with exhalation valves on board, as it claims that they have been deemed ineffective in protecting against COVID-19. In an update published on the airline website, it states that although valves make the mask more breathable for the person wearing it, they also allow infectious respiratory droplets to spread outside the mask.
